A. An increasing number of dentists appreciate the opportunity of seeing children about the time the first baby teeth are erupting. This is at approximately six months of age. Q. Six months? Why so soon? A. The dentist will want to discuss diet, use of fluorides, and home care which will aid in the development of healthy teeth and maintain the teeth and gums free of disease. The dentist also needs to tell you about a severe dental problem that affects some children, called "nursing caries." (See page 15). He or she will want to provide information regarding injuries to baby teeth, what can be done to avoid them, and what a parent should do if injuries occur. Q. When my children are older, what should I tell them before their visit to the dentist? A. Usually the less you tell the child and the more you leave to the discretion of the dentist and the dental office personnel, the easier the visit will be. The child can be told that the dentist will count the teeth, look at them, and possibly clean them, and that he or she will enjoy the visit. Q. Is it normal for the child to be afraid of the dentist? A. Children may be fearful of strangers and strange surroundings, but fear of the dentist is not natural. Well-meaning parents often try too hard to explain what the dentist will do during the appointment period. They may "Over-prepare" the child by using words and descriptions that the child cannot understand, resulting in an apprehensive or frightened child. Sometimes parents or playmates unintentionally or otherwise tell the young child something they have heard about the dentist, or perhaps mention their own fears. Again, this can cause the child to be fearful of a visit to the dentist. Q. But what if my child asks, "Will it hurt?" A. The answer is "No", because the dentist will make every effort of make you child’s visit comfortable and pleasant. Treat the visit as a normal occurrence. Q. For my information, what will the dentist do at the first visit? A. The dentist will examine the mouth and teeth of your child and if he or she feels it necessary, will take X-rays of the teeth. He may clean the teeth and advise both you and your child about their care, including tooth brushing, diet, and the use of fluorides. The dentist will check for any irregularities of the teeth and jaws, and discuss harmful habits. Future appointments will be a made for any necessary treatment. Q. My two-year-old child has a cavity in a tooth. Should it be filled? A. Yes, it should be treated as soon as possible, to avoid pain and infection. Q. What if my two-year-old son does not cooperate during the first dental appointment? A. Don’t worry about the possibility of your child’s not cooperating. In all probability the appointment will be uneventful. On the other hand, if the child does react in a fearful or excitable manner, the dentist will make every effort to determine the reason for the child’s behavior and help him manage his fears and apprehension. The dentist knows how go gain cooperation from young children. Some crying in the dental office from a very young child who may not fully understand the reason for the appointment does not worry the dentist and should not concern the mother. Q. How do I answer the questions, "will the dentist give me a ‘shot’?" A. Try to avoid giving a direct answer. Most dentist give a local anesthetic for the filling of primary teeth. You might say, "The dentist may put some medicine around your tooth to make it go to sleep, so you won’t feel anything." Q. Why take X-rays for a very young child? A. X-rays shows cavities and many unusual conditions such as missing or extra baby and permanent teeth, abscesses or abnormal growths; however, x-rays will be taken only if the dentist feels they are necessary for an acc |
